This is just a query, it isn't causing me a problem, but in the cupboard which houses my water tanks and is behind my bathtub, there is a sawn off extra overflow pipe. Here is a picture of it.

It's been blocked off inside with a silicon of some kind.

May query is why would this be here and what is it?

It appears to have flowed down from a previous hot/cold water tank - is this possible? And then it was just left and filled in when things were replaced?
 
What is the 1" 1/2 pipe connected too, is that coming from cold storage tanks?

Yes it is! Is it just an old pipe from a previous tank that a less than scrupulous plumber didn't get rid of properly? Or is that common practice?
 
Do you live in scotland by any chance? overflows of this size are only normaly encounterd there.

It may be that the original 1" 1/4 was not big enough to take the water away, so he up-graded?

Or you must have hell of a tank, or it is a long distance to feed out side?

Perhaps he was going to fit something up in the loft? May be it was going to vent something ?

Maybe he wasnt sure like me! Are you sure that 1" 1/2 is an overflow

Iam led to belive that the scottish regs require this size overflow for even domestic tanks!.

Blackcatgas has suggested that 1 1/2" overflow pipes are used in Scotland. Would this explain your shock at the size of it?

With this information, would you say it was an old overflow pipe, just diposed of poorly?

We use 22mm for domestic overflows South of the border, can you see where it comes out outside?, does it come out nest to the 1 1/2 pipe, Il bet its just an old pipe that as you say hasnt been pulled out. If its not doing any harm ie letting in vermin etc then Id just leave it.
 
Ive only been as far as newcastle, so yes, for domestic that seems excessive. but maybe your tanks
are large too.
 
Thankyou everyone! I'll check the outside tomorrow and have a nosey! No vermin (phew!) so I'll just leave it!
