Hello,
I have a heatline s-24 boiler. Recently when the heating is on, the radiators on the ground floor (where the boiler is) are cold (sometimes warmish at the top of the rad) while radiators in the upper floors are hot.
From what I read online that means the pump is gone. However, sometimes, when the heating is on full blast for a while, all the radiators are hot all the way through. Does this still means the pump is broken? Does this suggest another issue?
Would like to have an idea before I call an engineer as in the past they weren't all that helpful!
Thanks,
T

I understand your point, well most of us have doubts when it comes to services. But try to search for qualified service provider online, anyway may determine it if they are good or not through their customer reviews.

I have booked an engineer for Monday, if anyone has any thoughts on the matter I would still be interested to hear so we are more clued up. Thanks!

I’d look for sludge in the system if upstairs is getting hot but not downstairs, this would damage the pump by making it work harder

So the engineer was just here and like you, he said it's either the pump or sludge... he did not give a definite reason, not sure what to do next, how can I decide? Should I get a different engineer?
Replacing the pump can potentially cost a lot of money, so I dont want to go ahead if that's not the issue...
Thanks!
T

All we do is an educated guess. Removing the pump will give an indication. Best to get the system cleaned anyway, as your symptoms say it is.

Did he remove the screw in the front of the pump and test how strong the impeller was spinning? Without even coming out to see the job we can already surmise it is either the pump or sludge or both! So you're no better off than before your engineer came out!
How handy are you at DIY? Do you feel confident enough to take off a radiator and connect it to a garden hose pipe to flush it out yourself. If you find it is full of sludge then you should think about putting a good cleaner in the system for a few days and then having a powerflush performed adding a decent mag filter at the same time and then a good quality inhibitor put in for long term protection.
As your pump is in the boiler casing you will have to leave that for an engineer to test and replace if it is necessary.
I would also suggest you find a different engineer that last one was not very helpful at all and left you with the same problem and the same question, is it sludge, the pump or even both???

Do you have TRVs downstairs, and if so, is the room at or above the TRV setting? There may be nothing wrong, you could try opening the TRVs wider. Long shot but worth considering before you get the plumbing kit out.

Hi all,
@Darren No, the engineer did not test anything, and when I asked questions he said maybe I should just 'live with this issue' or 'replace the boiler'. So yes, maybe I should find someone that can diagnose the issue before we spend £300 on replacing a pump that may be still working.
So in theory when I call an engineer they should be able to open the boiler and diagnose whether the pump is working rather than an educated guess?
Thanks in advance,
T

Hello, I am seeking some advice, I have a POTTERTON PROMAX 28 COMBI Boiler and I noticed yesterday that the water around the house is no longer warming up. The heat exchanger has been changed 6 months ago, so I do not believe it is that. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Thanks

We run a community village hall and have a large kitchen provided for the use of hirers. This includes a Lincat SLR9 gas cooker which I believe is a 23.8Kw appliance with all six burners and oven on max. This was installed some 10 years ago and has passed all subsequent Gas Safety inspections as...
