hi lads,

I would like to pick your brains please. Who is allowed to upgrade the mains from footpath to the basement?
Am I allowed to do it myself? I have done many times in Europe and would do it if I was allowed to undertake the works.

The usual method is to install the new pipe yourself, leave it at the boundary and then get the local water authority to connect it up, but there will be a charge for this.

Thank you Craig, for your fast respond. Do you know what the charge would be? Why can I not attach the mains mdpe pipe to the mains supply which is already new? It’s basically just one connection.
 
Basically anything leading up to and including the boundary stop tap is the responsibility of the water authority. Anything after that is the responsibility of the home owner. If your attaching the pipe after the boundary stop tap then you are ok so long as you are not physically connecting to the stop tap. Keep your new pipe at a depth of between 750 and 1350mm and you will be fine, and obviously any work you do can't involve digging up the footpath.

The regs I know I just wanted to find out if I was able to connect the new pipe onto the new mains stop tap and doing laying a new pipe towards the basement.
 
Sorry wasn't insinuating you didn't know the regs, just thought i would be thorough in my answer. So yes the pipe your fine with, connecting to the stop tap I'm sure you can't, but speak to the water authority first regarding this.

Thank you for your help mate it’s much appreciated. Don’t get me wrong I did not want to come across rude I just meant that I know the depth as I am doing it not the first time. I just wanted to double check with you all to make sure I am doing all to regs you know!!!

Ive never had an issue, suppose it depends on the water authority. I've put many pipes in, and I've had customers put the pipes in themselves to save on the Labour. Anglian water who serve my area like to see the pipe so your not allowed to backfill until they have attached to it but they've never asked who installed it.
 
Have to be qualified if they have to connect the stop tap but you can get around this by leaving the pipe visible / sanded in as they will inspect it

If they don’t it’s down to them

LCS to new water mains
Hi, I have an old steel water mains pipe (approx 45mm) that I need to connect to a new pehd water mains (25mm). I can't get at it to create a new thread so what's the best way of connecting the two? Cheers, Peter

Sewer pipe problems not sure about it
Hi all Noticed bad smell in my drain out side put my hand down and it unclogged it for now however I checked my sewer drain and after flushing my toilet a good few times nothing is going to the sewer so don't know is there a blockage or what way it works many thanks and advice would be grateful
