I have a customer that I am putting in a new heat only Baxi boiler and small unvented cylinder but she has an odd configuration on her current cylinder which I've not come across before.
I've attached a photo, what confuses me is that there is no sort of mechanical valves either 2 port of mid position to control the flow direction off the boiler. On her programmer she can have hot water on, hot water and heating on but not just heating on. There are 2 pumps, I assume one is from the boiler which goes straight in to the cylinder so I can't see how it gets round the rads unless it always goes through the cylinder. The second pump I assume is for the hot water circulation. Another thing is for a small self fed tank on the same level as the bahroom she has excellent flow and pressure. I've seen simular tanks that dribble out HW.

Looks and sounds like a gravity system mate. Will need an upgrade of pipework and controls. Any pictures of the boiler?

Edit - should have said set up and not system

Pumps will act as zone valves. I suppose you can fairly easily work out tracing the pipework backwards. I guess it’s some semi converted gravity set up. I suppose it doesn’t really matter as you will be ripping it all out to put in an S plan for the unvented. If hot is that good make sure there is no pump under the bath or similar.
 
The boiler is an Ideal Classic and I've asked for a picture without lagging.
Yes been GS registered for about 3yrs now.
I was planning an S plan but wasn't sure if the flow for the central heating was one of the pipes in the cupboard.
Also I can't get my head round why she couldn't just have heating on.
Definilty no pumps, she has good flow on the basin as well.

You need to PM your gas safe number to @Harvest Fields or @Riley or @ShaunCorbs
 
There was a period when two-pump systems were not uncommon. I'm not sure, but I guess it was because the extra pump was not much more expensive than two zone valves, and pumps tolerated the relatively high level of sludge in open systems better than zone valves.

It was certainly very common to convert a gravity indirect HW circuit to a pumped one.

Its a thermal store , one pumps water around the store , not to the taps , the other pump runs the heating.

Ok so that would explain the need to always have the Hot Water on when there is a demand for heating, the HW heats the store and the heating draws from that store.
Does that mean the cylinder has two separate coils inside?
