Hi,

I have had a new unvented system installed. When the hot water has been heating up for some time and I turn on the taps or the shower I get a loud noise lasting a few seconds from the cupboard where the tank is. If I turn the taps off again soon afterwards I get a similar noise. This only happens when you run the taps for the first time after the water has heated up.

Any advice on what could be causing the problem would be much appreciated.

These posts are a bit tricky , I can tell you what to try but we have to obey forum rules , you need to be G3 registered to work on these cylinders .
If I tell you what to do and you do it , we are breaking the rules . @ShaunCorbs , what do you think ?

Dont worry there is no way I'm going to do anything to it myself! My plumber has not been able to solve the problem and I'm just after some pointers before I go and get a second opinion.
 
In my opinion, any plumber who leaves pipes floating in mid-air like that is either not qualified or needs retraining.

You need to get a reputable G3 installer in to review the installation. At the very least they will need to install some pipe supports and clips that the first guy forgot about and make sure that the sytem is correctly commissioned. Don't leave it too long before getting it fixed as that amount of movement can cause joints to leak or fail and high pressure systems cause a lot of mess and damage when that happens.

Take some photographs and get a written estimate / quote from your new plumber stating what needs doing. You can use these as evidence to reclaim the cost from the first plumber and report him to whichever 'competent persons' scheme he claims to be a member of.

Now seen. IMO fixing that pipework properly would see most of that disappear.

Thanks everyone for you comments. I have checked to see if I have the manuals for the boiler and cylinder with the completed commissioning sheets and I don't. I have asked the plumber to provide them which he says he will do this evening.

I checked and the plumber is gas safe registered. It seems he is but not for unvented systems. He has provided the gas inspection record. It does not list the cylinder but I am not sure if it needs to.

Is there a way to verify if he is G3 registered other than with Gas Safe?

He is a subcontractor of my builder and I am witholding payment pending the resolution of this problem.

Thanks everyone for your posts. It’s given me a lot to think about.

I clearly need to find out if the plumber is appropriately qualified. I guess the only way of being absolutely sure about this is to ask him for evidence.

If it turns out he doesn’t have G3 then my builder is not going to get final payment until he sorts it and he’s going to have to do some crawling to avoid being reported to someone.

If he does have G3 then then I am back where I started. I will insist the builder fixes it before I pay up the final balance and suggest to him that he might want to get another plumber to look at it.

Any other ideas very welcome.
 
So the consensus seems to be that the pipes need to be secured properly to stop them vibrating and that might be the end of the problem. Any other thoughts?
