I have seen and worked with radiator back boxes on the ground floor were pipe are dropped in the middle of the rad. and through a back box and looped around to go back to the manifold. However how is it done on the first floor were pipe are coming to the back box from below? Do they go up the centre and have a elbow then a street elbow inside the back box to bring the pipes back down through the bottom off the back box? Thanks for any insight.

This is how i do it behind dot and dab add foil tape for protection it also helps the pipe to be found with a stud finder fit safe plates at skirting level . cheers kop

Me personally I wouldn't want to do it like kop has done

I would rather do tboe or normally and loop it behind the rad

Thanks, what over way would you recommend?

Come up out from the floor into the back box/ guide and loop it up and down into the rads ( like you do when you drop the feeds from above but upside down

Yes

If you want / need it tight you can use an elbow

Thanks so you basically put the back box upside down with the pipes sticking out the top?

yes and loop or use an elbow round

Seems like a long run of 10mm to that rad?
On the new builds I worked on we'd only run the last couple of meters in 10mm or the drop to the rad, use silver tape behind the pipework so it could be found and put the box just above skirting height then enter at the bottom of the box in the centre of the rad

6m run is the max no joints under the floors heating manifolds in a hallway cupboard, system can be pressure tested on first fix each run is one continuous length of pipe no issues with air locks not suitable for every project but worked very well on these one bed flats 5 rad systems ,which were above a shop the floors were sound proofed ,caber decked , with ply on top and wood plank vinyl flooring so it was really important not to have fittings under the floor as any failures would be so costly, no chance of screwing through the pipe when fitting the rad brackets sure there are other methods but it so easy to kink the pipe this method works for me systems now been installed for 8 months with no issues . cheers kop

Won't be air lock problems, just fit rad valves with drain offs on to enable full drain down of rad. Silver tape not needed unless your on a nhbc new build. If being solid plastered use some stich lagging to help stop plaster cracking.

Why not pipe it out of the floor in 15mm chrome?
Far better than those awful back boxes. And 10mm sludge collection pipe.

Thanks, do they usually sell the with single gang 25mm steel KO boxes with grubber grommets at plumbers merchants?

Its specified 10mm so the pipes can be hidden easier especially on the drops to the downstairs rads.

Can I just ask what kind of height you tend to set the back boxes to. With regards to the height of the bottom of the rad? about 100mm up from the bottom of the rad?
