Hi all. I live in an area where periodically the smell of sewer is quite over bearing, unfortunately for me when this happens the smell also totally engulfs my house, every room, so bad I have to go stop with my mum. I have had the water board twice and they say all pipes are clear and I have just spent a fortune on having all my pipes replaced including broken soil stack and a cracked pipe in my yard at the suggestion of environmental health yet this happened again yesterday. Does anyone have any clue why this is just my house and no one else on my row and what to do. Thank you

Do you have internal or external soil pipe as I am having the same problems but mine is an internal stack and it doesn't affect the whole house?? If internal does it have an AAV?

Hi Keirao1 thanks for reply but we have an external one, the smell of rotten eggs is driving me mad!!, the minute the smell disappears outside it disappears in my house too, aghhhh

There are many reasons, but finding which is the difficult part.
1.There could be leaks (air) on soil and waste pipe work

Woops as i was saying
1. Pipes
2. Traps on appliances being drawn and or not deep enough. This can be one appliance when flusing /emptying cause a negative or positive pressure within the soil / waste system sucking water out of traps. Allowing sewage gases to enter premises
3. Some manholes on drainage system have an intersepter trap that also have a ground level vent pipe with a non return flap.
4. Vent pipe is not terminating high enough above opening. (window etc.)
5. Traps drying out from lack use.
6. General bad plumbing EG. Soil pipes being used as rainwater pipe at say gutter level

How is the ground floor constructed? I am wondering whether it is a suspended floor. If the sewer gas has its source below the void it will permeate the whole house and also leak outside via the air bricks designed to ventilate the void. This would mean that when the house is affected there will also be some smell outside the house. When the house stops being affected the smell outside will disperse rapidly too.

Building speculation on speculation, I'd suspect a broken drain under or near to the house with foul water soaking the soil.

In my experience, with this sort of problem the most effective solution is getting a specialist company to do a proper survey of your drains. They will use a combination of visual inspection, pressure tests and cameras and will be able to recommend appropriate remedies.

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...

Hello all, I’m replacing a concrete paving slab patio in the back yard. The original patio used 50mm deep concrete slabs on hardcore & sand. I’m planning to pour a 100mm deep concrete patio on 100mm hardcore. In order to achieve the same final height to line up with the rest of the patio, I...

We run a community village hall and have a large kitchen provided for the use of hirers. This includes a Lincat SLR9 gas cooker which I believe is a 23.8Kw appliance with all six burners and oven on max. This was installed some 10 years ago and has passed all subsequent Gas Safety inspections as...
