Discuss Central heating system making loud vibrating noises at seemingly arbitrary times in the Plumbing Jobs | The Job-board area at PlumbersForums.net

Hi all! I hope this is is the right place to be asking this question. I have searched all around the internet but can only find issues that are similar, none that are the same as mine.

I can get specific models of everything and take pictures when I am home if that would help anyone give advice for this.

I have a basic system boiler and at seemingly random times there is this very loud vibrating noise that appears to be coming from the hot water storage tank. The noise will stop after anything between 10 seconds and a few minutes, it's quite a scary sound. The sound will resonate throughout the whole heating system and can be heard clearly from every room.

When the noise is happening the pressure guage, still comfortably within the safe area, will vibrate violently. Turning the boiler off at the mains switch will immediately stop the noise and it will not continue once turned back on.

It doesn't seem to make a difference if the hot water or heating is on at the time or if any pipes are being used, it's happened whilst I am lying in bed.

Just wondering if there are any good places for me to start looking on my troubleshooting adventure? I'd like to have as much information as possible to give to a plumber when they arrive, especially if the noise doesn't happen whilst they are here.

Hope someone can help, thanks!

Sounds like the boiler / pipe work doesn't have an automatic byepass or it may just need adjusting. The pump is trying to run when it can't circulate. The pump will run even when there is no demand, due to "pump over run" which is designed to dissipate heat from the boiler

Or more accurately - I would like to have a go fixing it myself, which is fine.
Check that the filling loop has not been left open & the safety valve is discharging & snapping shut.
