rodders started a thread Coating everything with silicone!! in Plumbing Forum

Why do some plumbers feel the need to coat everything with silicone!! Just got back from changing two diaphragm in a school toilets (so it was not a DIY job!) and everything water touched had loads of silicone coated on! Retaining nut, rubber washer in cistern, nut on the flush pipe. Then PTFE and silicone mix of the thread of the syphon! I changed the diaphragms stripped all the PTFE all the silicone just nipped everything back up and guess what. No leaks! So why do some plumbers insist on coating everything with silicone it's just not needed! The syphon is designed not to leak so why do some people still insist on this nonsence and make future maintenance jobs that little bit harder. I've come across this loads of times and never got a call back for a leak. :rant:

I hope it works out for you coz its them sort of people that get the trade a bad name he might just be an installer who has got no clue about fault finding and if he cant do the job just put his hands up and say so and give u a bit back

check theres no visable signs on your rad glands of leakage and also theres no puddles under ur boiler ruling out cracked heat ex could ur pressure gage be faulty

IT COULD BE A NUMBER OF THINGS CAUSED BY SLUDGE I E blocked heat exchanger pump not taking the heat away fast enough due to sediment in it the plumber should have flushed it for twice as long as on a normal flush if its a 10mm micrabore if its 8mm I doubt if hes even flushed it he may just have added some inhibiter

if hes done a powerflush I cant see it being the heat exchanger unless he did it disconnecting the flow and return pipes to the boiler I e just flushing the pipework to the rads and bypassing the boiler

why is he coming back as he put cleaner in the system then draining down to put some protector in or is he doing another powerflush the noise from ur pump could be trapped air it may need bleeding
