Which Drill?

Hi Guys,

I'm after a new drill which one of these would be the best choice?

Avoid the Hitachi one. Though they make very good tools. That drill is gutless, and doesn't have a hammer function. (I have used that exact drill but bought from B&Q). A mate of mine on site bought it as he thought it was a bargain. He broke it on purpose and took it back to them for a refund.

The Dewalt one has a hammer (it will only be a light hammer but can be useful).

The Bosch one will be ok, not the best batteries though.

If you do go for the Makita, the model they are selling for £99 is the old 18V, red battery model. No fancy lithium battery, plastic chuck, very simple drill, with a light hammer function.

I had this drill many years ago (when it was cutting edge) and it is brilliant. The new Makita lithium batteries are crap. My latest cordless drills cost me £400 each. Makita 18V lithium. In one combi impact, and one drill driver. They're both crap. Honestly.

The old fashion Ni Cad MAkita batteries are still very good value for money and reliable. The lithium ones are rubbish. They lose their charge so quickly. Also the gear box on my £400 drill driver crunches when you tighten the chuck in gear 3. The combi impact driver smokes when you put a 25mm hole through timber. Its a joke. Its rated for it.

My old Makita (as selling for £99) was a bloody brilliant drill, and I should have saved myself a fortune and just bought one of them.

I'm a total tool ***** though and always buy the best I can afford.

I've had the makita cordless and driver drill 14.4 normal battery for over a year now, brilliant, driver blasts screws into anything and the drill makes light work or drilling joists, i use bosch drill bits and it literally takes 10 seconds to drill a 25mm hole.

I have a dewalt 18v, must be over two years old now. The only issue I have is the hammer is a little light on old stone walls.

I was leaning towards the makita anyway, and was seduced by the lithium battery thing so thought the hitachi would be better. I have used the makita in work a few times and it is excellent, so it looks like I should go with my first instinct after all
