thinking of getting into solar in hampshire. however never had anyone approach regarding solar install. is there much demand for solar subcontracting out ther, to offthe risk of no work? what is the take up experienced by sole traders in the south. regards.

It's a nice idea to do solar but I've found people would rather spend their money on a quality normal boiler nowadays. When things finish picking up people may look at it again but not a high cust priority?

A few customers like to talk about this but when you start mentioning what's involved they fear a major raid on their bank account.

In fairness with a payback of around 10 years the young tend not to be able to afford it, the middle aged might well be moving within 10 years and the older ones don't want the hassle.

that seems on par with what i have found. i have reduced my gas bill by about two thirds by replacing my boiler and going to town on insulating my house. this is the advice i give everyone these days. I would love to think i can progress into solar, but to be honest, and as mentioned elsewhere in the forum, it seems to be the big corporate companies who seem to be milking it, with little room for independants. i attended the installer road show which was as expected, very positive about the industry, but, i have found the reality of the truth a little hard to swallow. i had thought about doing solar thermal as an add on to what we currently do with domestic gas, but fear it will be hundreds of pounds down the drain. I dont even want to go on to the MCS system, which seems biased yet again to larger companies who have the financial muscle to make this process work.

do our european neighbours have to go through all this to install renewable technologies ? they have been fitting them for years

they probably just go down their local suppliers get the bits they need and go and fit it where they want. you always hear stories about eu policies that no other country but ours seem to adhere to or it seems to me lol.

Hi Eddie

I see you are in Fareham, which is where I am based as it happens. You may even be one of my customers.....

As you will see from the other thread, I am campaigning to have MCS accreditation simplified for independent installers, but we have what we have at the moment.

I do have some ideas about the way forward as things stand and I'll happily sit down with you over a coffee & give you my thoughts if you think that will help. DM me your number and I'll contact you next week if that sounds like a good idea.

go to germany and everybody is having it fitted,its goverment grants.
nobody wants it here cos the relative payback is so long ,and when you tell the custard he will save 50pound a year its a no.
working on a new build at the mo, grand design thing, i asked the owner about renewables he said wasnt worth it just a good worcester boiler.

I think its September this year all new builds will have to incorporate some form of renewable technology
