Just got beat with a quote to supply and fit a new bathroom suite, towel rad, tile 18m2 of wall and floor. Some muppet quoted £850 and got the job No wonder the industry is in such a mess.

It may work in some areas but in London its mostly used by what I call Third World origin workers who buy houses in other countries and dont have UK house purchase costs.

I did a trial and actually got a job out of them doing a gas pipe. But she was a nightmare and wanted extra work doing within the agreed price and particularly an invoice for an extra 50% to send to her insurance company!

She was quite nice but those sort of customers always want something extra!

She showed me the other two quotes she got and they were both about what I wanted and not too

hat cheap for the actually work needed.

we are always getting calls from rated people and similar sites it works for some and not others if you sign up for em all you will spend more than you earn
i am registerd with boiler guide
its free to reg but not cheap to buy a lead
they only sell the details of each job to three tradesmen so you have a fair crack at the job

Rated people is one big rip off, it is geared towards the customer putting the ball in their court. You have to pay for their contact details then THEY tell YOU how much they want to pay and you might not even get the job. Web sites like this encourage time wasters and penny pinchers and there is always a desperate plumber out there that is willing to undercut your price even without looking at the job, the only winners here is the website that charge you £48 per month and anywhere between £10-£70 per lead (customers phone number) which 2 other plumbers are also allowed to purchase, this encourages cut throat tacticts where plumbers are undercutting each other in desperation driving the prices down. More importantly the customer senses this and plays one against another putting the ball in their court. I do not recommend this to anyone a very frustrating way to try and get work and the majority of the time ending up costing you money. Avoid at all costs for the sake of your dignity and the future of plumbing.

Totaly agree with this, wont be using them again, rather spend my money advertising elsewere

fully disagree on that , leads are fake as they come !!

who told you only three tradesmen get the details? not them surely

i had rated people and service magic call me A LOT!! i went really quiet for a while so i couldnt afford to pay for the leads. service magis wanted 50 for a boiler lead? good or bad? anyways ive just picked 4 months work on site, total refurb of heating in flats. so be o n good money for a while, ive got a website going flyers and local ads and still dont get nothing local? so im hunitng the direct gov etc for a proper job now. arghhhhh

Agreed, anything where high pressure sales techniques are required is generally because the benefits lie with the seller, not the buyer. They advertise on TV and make joe public think they can get someone they can trust. If it's like most other ratings websites it'll be a load of guff with fake reviews.

It might be worth it for somebody starting out, but I can think of several other ideas for £40 per month

Boiler guide do not sell leads to three trades man they sell it to as many as they can i went to one where they had sold it to 6 !!

boiler guide utter con !

Yup thats right chum they sell the same lead over and over, so everyone goes in cheap,

Problems with websites mentioned here are that leads are too expensive, going to too many traders, you never get your money refunded, just credit. Its purely made to make huge financial profit to their owners, that's why they are selling leads to multiple tradesmen.

this whole thread just emphasises to me that there's no substitute for getting your own business through word of mouth and persoanl recomendations.

True, but in the real world that doesn't bring in enough money to pay the bills, moreso now with the huge amount of competition there is now. Alternative ways of bringing work in have to be found. I can't live on tap washer and syphon changes which are often the result of personal recommendations.

Don`t bother with rat ed people we tried them, got no work and cost us a fortune!!!!!

I've spent the last 4 years building up my sole trader business to a level where I am now kept busy through repeat business and personal recommendations. I have used rated people in the past, and must admit that I found them a very useful way of picking up jobbing work. I've not used them for quite some time now, and when I cancelled the quarterly membership fee they put me on their pay as you go set up which increases the lead cost but there is no membership to pay.
If you pick and choose your leads carefully to suit your needs, rated people can be a useful way of bringing in some much needed work.

Used Rated People now for over 3 years and when the going gets tough then its quite handy I've found. Have to use it to your benefit, last years membership was £120 +vat, renewal due the other week but left for a while, queried prices for leads the other day and got through to cust services who were able to give me 3 free leads and years membership for £60 plus vat.
Got a job for a gas safety check which lead to a boiler swap so paid for in one hit really.

have been using rated people for over a year can complain made some good money, you get to learn you are time wasters by what they say in the job description. They only sell the lead to three engineers so its not bad but 30 to 40 percent are time wasters.

i signed up about 16 months ago at first i wasnt makin any money as there was alot of timewasters but you have to read what they want
and you can usualy tell if they want a job doing or just after a price i was buying jobs between 5 and 10 pounds and priced jobs and got 51 0ut of 70 had 5 star rating on all jobs mist one monthly payment they closed my acount deleted my website i will never use them again paul

Been a member for a while and only take jobs that are close to me, if I dont like the sound of the job I dont try very hard to get in touch with them - (just call the customer and let the phone ring three times and give up), then I ask rated for a refund since the customer was unresponsive, not the way I would prefer to deal with them but it can cost allot of money to chase jobs that are not worth looking at

Pound for pound I would have thought you'd be better off taking out an add in a local paper. The problem with these lead generating sites is, is that there are just too many of them out there. The more tradesmen sign up to sites like these the more will get ripped of by them. Anyone who believes that a lead is sold only to 3 tradesmen are living in cloud cuckoo land. As these sites have no issues about lieing to potential customers about how they vet the listed traders.....They will have no problem lieing to the trader. Finally when these lead generating sites offer you credit for non existent leads, you are within your rights to demand a cash refund, you do not have to accept a credit, no matter what their terms and conditions may say.

Ads in local paper no longer work as well as they used too. Know why? It's because fewer people are buying newspapers and even fewer have the money at their disposal to afford the services of a tradesman.

Rated People has worked really well for me, been crap for others but it's the way that you approach it that matters. When you get a lead, the next biggest thing is to be able to sell yourself and your services to the customer.....show why you're better than the other 2 that have put in quotes. Sadly, many find this important and basic aspect of running a business very difficult.

As to Rated People, they are about the most credible out of the lot of these services and genuinely ONLY THREE tradesmen get to bid. My customers are testament of that.

Have you tried checkatrade system? I was of the opinion is probably still regarded as the number 1.
Depends on location really. Rated People are best known because of the heavy advertising on TV they do up here

Ah. Down here every other van has a checkatrade sticker on it.

I've been thinking about it using it for a while because I do mainly small jobs and so would be able to build up feedback quite quickly.

My mate has been on check a trade for years, he said it used to be really good but now there are so many people on it its no were near as good, for example if you type in plumber in Bournemouth you get 324 companies come up in the search results. I joined about 2 weeks ago but haven't had anything yet.
