The new iPad is called..." New iPad" they must have been up all night thinking that one up. So far from keynote speech, live -

• Apple announces new iPad, available 16 March
• Confirms 'Retina Display', A5X processor and 5MP camera
• Also adds LTE and voice dictation
• iOS 5.1 announced; brings Siri to Japan and Australia
• Apple TV updated

7.05pm Apple is introducing iPhoto, its sophisticated image editing software, for the iPad. It looks like the Photo app's days are numbered.

7.07pm Phil Schiller shows off the difference between the iPad 2 screen and the new iPad (still no name!) retina display

7.10pm We're getting a detailed demonstration of the new iPhoto app. It looks quites impressive, taking full advantage of that new A5X chip and its four cores.

7.15pm An interesting quote from Phil Schiller: "Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't create on an iPad," he says. That's basically Intel's whole marketing strategy for the new (impressive) ultrabook laptops.

7.20pm News just in: iPad 2 will remain on sale - a boon for those who wanted a cheaper iPad. In the USA it will be $399, and the new iPad will start at $499.

7.25pm Apple has just wrapped up its keynote: the new iPad features a better processor, the A5X, a Retina Display, voice dictation and an improved camera. A series of better apps are released too, and the highlight looks to be picture editor iPhoto. But it's name is a big surprise: it's called 'new iPad'.

7.33pm Reaction is starting to pour in. The announcement pretty much stuck to the script, and the entertainment industry is pleased. Here's Liz Bales of the Industry Trust for IP Awareness:

The launch of the iPad 3 is great news for the audio-visual industry. In the last year alone we’ve seen a whole host of new film, video and TV apps for tablet devices enter the market, from Blinkbox to Crackle. We expect the iPad 3 to drive even more demand for these, as people explore how to get the most from their top-end devices and capitalise on the growing wealth of legal film and TV services available online. We hope the halo effect of this will be to tempt those who currently use illegal sites to enjoy the innovative and flexible benefits these official services offer.”

7.40pm Journalists are just starting to get the first chance to play with the new iPad, and The Verge reckon it's impressive - but that it will take some serious gaming to form a judgement at this stage. Our own Shane Richmond will be sending his views over in the very near future.

7.48pm Like most observers, Adrian Kingley-Hughes of ZDNet thinks the new ipad is bad news for Apple's already-struggling Android competition. He's listed his reasons:

This iPad refresh is bad news for Android tablets on a number of fronts:

- The iPad has a tremendous graphics advantage over Android tablets, even ones powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor. Apple claims the A5 chip in the iPad 2 had twice as much graphics power as the Tegra 3. The new A5X has four times the graphics power.
- Screen density will blow away the competition.
- Price is exactly what consumers expected it to be. No nasty surprises.
- Awesome battery life for a high-end device.
- Availability is a little over a week away, not weeks or months like many tablets.
- The 16GB iPad 2 will continue to be sold at a reduced price of $399 for the WiFi model and $529 for the WiFi+3G … that’s a clever ploy that helps stitch up the mid-range market.

7.55pm While the fanboys salivate, it's worth recalling that Apple has been under fire recently for its use of low cost Chinese labour under sometimes appalling conditions. Mike Daisey, a self-confessed "former worshiper in the Cult of Mac", has written for the New York Daily News:

Apple can’t deny problems exist — it has paid an outside organization to inspect its factories, even though its own inspections have shown widespread problems for years. It is hoping that the public will forget about the suicide nets stretched between the buildings to catch workers who try to kill themselves.

7.58pm Back to absolute trivia. The new iPad's name - "The New iPad" - is generating a lot of debate.

Some are suggesting that an "iPad 3" with 4G connectivity could have confused consumers. Others point out that Apple doesn't number iterations of its laptops or desktops, so perhaps it wants to move its mobile branding away from the geekier numbered nomenclature.

Will there ever be an iPhone 5? Oh my...

I'll cool it for the live commentary. Cheers mods for grouping posts. Modify don't seem to be working.

Well, look forward to the new toy & all that's tempted to get an iPad for business should wait till the new ones out & let the iPad 2 drop in price!
