Hi all I have a bit of a problem. I need a 4" stack opening through a massive stone wall...What is the best way to do this do you think? Is an SDS drill to small? I'm afraid I'll be there for days...

probably be best to hire a core drill will be much better than a sds drill.

core drill no good on stone pilot bit sds and kango or similar the only way to go apart from dynamite LOL

What is a Kango? By pilot bit do you mean just drill loads of little holes and break out with sds chisel?

What type of stone? Sandstone is no problem but even granite and whin can be cored quite easily with the right gear. You could hire the drill or get a specialist drilling company in.
Other alternative is an SDS max gun or a 4lb hammer and a couple of chisels and maybe a pinch bar. Take the full stones out put the pipe through and build it back in.
Thick walls are built with a stone around 9" thick on the inside and outside and rubble infill between. Would take 2-4 hrs to cut.

Kango 950. One of the best rotary breakers ever made.

Cheer for the replies guys really appreciate it will let you know what the plan is when I get a chance to think lol.

hire a good set of diamond core drills it will take a while but you will get there!! keep the faith and take some breaks otherwise your arm might fall off lol

nah, that makes more mess than my core drill LOL

Years back no one had core drills or Kangos and the flues were all 12" square or thereabouts. The only way through the wall was by hammer and chisel. It is not as hard to do as you think and can be done in a couple of hours by hand. Even the hardest stone splits easily if you learn how to read the grain.
Hard work won't kill you but if you do enough of them, you will grow forearms like popeye:p:D

thats what we used when i started in the trade we had the kango then but its bloody heavy and you cant use it off a ladder but here in wales a lot of houses have between 21/23 inch walls a core no matter how good wont do it,the kango laughs at them its now 35 years old apart from a set of brushes its never gone wrong they dont make tools like that anymore and to the op a kango is a heavy duty destruction hammer

i would use my 6kg sds with a half round chisel in that should do it fairly neat and quick then point of after.

or just go down to your local builders merchant and get a 4'' hole to go.
