Mr Carter

From reading many posts from the forums on this site it seems as if everybody has either thought about doing a home study course, or is actually studying the course at the moment in plumbing l etc. But has anybody finished a course? got the qualification and been able to get a job out of it?

If you mean a fast track course, I did but I'm in a minority. Most people struggle to get the on site experience required to sit the final exams. Even when you complete the course you aren't really prepared for the real world. Saying that I'd have never done it any other way as I wouldn't have been able to afford to live without money coming in. I think I'm about there now but I've been lucky to have someone to fall back on for advice. You never stop learning but doing it fast track is a steep learning curve and not for everyone

How did you get on site experience to go on to finish the exam? I am worried about being able to find help to get experiance because all i wanna do is watch and do bits and peaces here and dere to gain the experiance what did u say to get the experiance? Is going self employed the best way?

I was lucky a close friend of mine was in the game and agreed to help me out, if you look through the forum there are loads of people who are desperate to get the required experience, I'm not sure what the answer is but if it was me thinking about giving someone a break, I'd be looking for a well written introduction to who you are and what you want to achieve. A bit of background about you with qualifications gained thus far in life and what you can bring to the party. You would need to be willing and able to work for free for a not inconsiderable time also. A sense of humor helps too

yes, my mate finished the level 2 (6129) and i have just finished the level 2 (6035 prev 6129). My mate is working with a Gas Safe as self employed plus other work he does, i don't see me going that route yet.
Other guys who completed same time as me, 1 was just about to set off as self employed (good luck to him), one was already self employed and the course was to boost skills, 1 is employed with site work.
Overall, i would say only sign up to a level 2 course if doing study at home. IF you like it and get it done then decide which area of level 3 to go for (renewables / unvented etc) and at that stage maybe look to getting employment to back up the skills you need for level 3.
Anyway, I got a lot from it in doing practicals, the bookwork took far too long for me!

I am sorry Mr Carter but you really have an unrealistic idea of what it takes to learn the trade of plumbing.

Firstly you believe it can be learnt out of a book without any interaction with another person or trainer who is there to point you in the right direction "no not like that, try this"

Secondly you believe that by just watching or at best only doing "bits and peaces here and were" you will gain the experience required.

Well again I am sorry, although it says "be nice" on here I think in this case I need to be cruel to be kind, WAKEUP & SMELL THE COFFEE, MATE !!!! you are never going to be one unless you understand what it is all about.

I actually find it quite insulting that you think it requires so little to master it.

Don't listen to Chris . It's not rocket science. A few you tube vids and about 1 week following some one and you will be good to go.......

Go to the van and carry my tools.

Don't listen to others , it ain't hard . Problem is will take some people 10 year and will take others 10 weeks !
We are all on a different intelligence level

Stan learned to Carry tools and make tea exceptionally fast. The short-course in home economics went really well for him. Make sure you buy sugar cubes and not granulated . Two reasons 1. when u confuse sugar and salt the tea is awful 2 . Tonto only likes sugar cubes.

Took me 4 weeks to become a plumber , and 2 weeks to become a gas fitter .......
Don't know nothing about Tea as I don't drink it , your informer was wrong :)
