If I install a direct unvented cylinder, can I just use the top immersion heater to heat the water I need? I have very limited need for hot water: only two mixer taps. I have no bath, just an electric shower, and the dishwasher is cold water fed. I do have gas central heating so can install an indirect unvented cylinder if I want to. The issue is which is cheapest to heat to meet my needs.

Are you going to install it yourself or get a pro in ?

If it's gas central heating then I'd definitely go for the unvented option. If you shop around the cheapest gas is about 20% the cost of the cheapest electricity. Modern cylinders are so well insulated the standing losses are negligible.

Make sure the person who installs it has a good reputation and has the 'G3 unvented' qulaification on their scheme membership card.

Thanks - do you think it's still cheaper to heat a whole unvented cylinder indirectly via the gas central heating system as opposed to only part of it directly using one of two immersion heaters? I'm assuming I have a c12o litre invented cylinder but only consume c30 litres of hot water each day.

You can't heat part of it. Hit and cold water mix to give warm, it doesn't separate

Yes.
