Just been to look at an old Vaillant combi for an elderly couple.
It's under a Vaillant contract and they have AR'd it because the bird guard fins of the inner flue terminal have gone brittle and fallen off.

Can I just fit a stainless flue guard to get over this?
 
Yes I would say so as it's only there to stop birds going in

But I would check the flue
