Towns gas had a relatively high moisture content, keeping joints sound. The conversion to NG caused the joints to dry and leak.
No idea if the "new" Hydrogen fuel is moist. But modern pipelines are not sterling, but "welded" plastic of some sort

It is terrible in Leeds at the moment getting around, nearly every street has road works going on as major gas line upgrades are taking place fitting miles & miles of new pipeline. As I understand it they will test your gas appliances to check they are safe before they turn the gas back on. If your appliance has a fault, it won't be safe to turn your gas back on and they won't be able to reconnect the supply until the appliance has been checked by a Gas Safe engineer. As their engineers are not qualified to repair appliances and will advise you to contact Gas Safe to find a local engineer. Things could get extremely busy round these parts when it start to come online.
