Hi there i am a training at college and am trying to get to grips with the recognised quality brands in the industry. I am just starting my level 2 tech certificate and am buying the basic tools to practice my soldering and bends at home. I have been advised to buy a hilmor bender, but what is the best blow torch for my needs, bearing in mind when i start plumbing as a profession in 3-4 years time i want a quality tool that will last. There are so many prices / types / different gases etc - it is very confusing to someone with no experience so any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I use the Rothenberger Superfire 2, bought it online and it has never let me down. But you can get them from your local plumb but not sure how much they are there. I bought an adaptor for the end of mine from plumb and it makes the flame smaller and just sits on the end of the torch its a great bit of kit

    I use this torch,
    TX504 Extreme Turbolite Torch

suitable for soldering up to 2" pipe, adjustable flame, and high temperature. I purchased this one because I was soldering large sizes of pipe when I worked in commercial.

Best blowlamp i ever had was a sievert gun on a flex to an 8lb gas bottle , so easy to manouver , seemed easier than holding rothy with propane bottle .

when I was on site about 25 years ago I used a bullfinch that had piezo ingnition with a dumpy bottle now as I get older it has to be something lighter a superfire2 with propane or mapp if on anything over 28 mm:)regards turnpin

    Superfire2/propane for me.

Not yet had a customer where I wanted a good accident but it's powerful enough to cause some major hassle in a few seconds . :D

Pretty good at soldering by the way

Danny the pencil adaptors are only really any use on half inch and if you burn the wallpaper using one of those you need a slap.

Up to around 12 years ago the nozzle of choice was the primus like this primus 8716.jpg with a medium burner or a full burner if working regular on 1" and above.
In the 90's Primus brought out the cyclone burner which was a great improvement. Hotter more controllable flame and no flaring. You can still buy them and they are as good as a surefire but you need a lighter. You can also use a primus bottle as a hammer if you are stuck
Before that and for site work it was the 8lb bottle and the nozzle on a hose.

There is a new genration of Gas torches around nowadays.
The Vulcane Express is my favorite, lightweight quick with interchangeable nozzles and spare piezo's Easy to use, reliable.
A bit pricey but what would you expect for a proffessional bit of kit.
