Imperial College London (legally Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine) is a public research university in London. Imperial grew out of Prince Albert's vision for a cultural centre in South Kensington, including the Royal Albert Hall, Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum, and Royal Colleges. In 1907, Imperial College was established by Royal charter, unifying the Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines, and City and Guilds of London Institute. In 1988, the Imperial College School of Medicine was formed by merging with St Mary's Hospital Medical School. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II opened the Imperial College Business School.
The college focuses exclusively on science, technology, medicine, and business. The main campus is located in South Kensington, and there is an innovation campus in White City. Facilities also include a research field station at Silwood Park and teaching hospitals throughout London. The college was a member of the University of London from 1908, becoming independent on its centenary. Imperial has an international community, with more than 59% of students from outside the UK, and 140 countries represented on campus.Student, staff, and researcher affiliations include 14 Nobel laureates, 3 Fields Medallists, 2 Breakthrough Prize winners, 1 Turing Award winner, 74 Fellows of the Royal Society, 87 Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and 85 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Changing/fixing a bunch of seized imperial and metric valves

Hi everyone, I'm new here! I've bought my first house - needs a fair bit of work doing to it, including the plumbing. I'm keen to do stuff myself rather than getting contractors in, wherever possible, not just for cost, but also because I want to learn (a useful life skill surely!) I'll...

When connecting a plastic metric waste pipe from a bath to a metal imperial pipe in the wall is it standard practice to use denso tape on the outside of the join? Does it stop potential leaking or movement?

imperial to metric pipe and flx

I continually read 1/2 inch imp copper pipe is same as 15mm... that being the case why are B and Q selling 15mm -1/2 inch imp copper coupling adaptors? I find 15mm copper fittings quite difficult to fit on 1/2 inch copper pipe so much so I will buy 15mm to replace it Does Powerfow flux go off...

Upgrading Imperial rads to modern rads

Hi, just went to swap the first of three imperial sized rads (750 wide by 500mm) to a metric 700*500 double convector and like a Doyle have found I didn't plan for the copper pipe to be another 10/15 mm in from the wall to meet with valve. Before I go ripping up floor boards, what will be the...

    URGENT Imperial stopcock issues!

Hello, I am a homeowner looking for advice. The mains water comes into our property via the downstairs cloakroom. House was built late 1970s. We've had three plumbers (local) that have been stumped/unable to remedy the situation. We're having the downstairs cloakroom refitted, and the...

    Imperial to Metric rad replacement

I need to replace some rads downstairs due to age. It looks like I’ll need to install tails with extensions (20mm either side for neatness) as the new rads would be 40mm to 45mm narrower. My main concern is that all the rads downstairs have tails with drain off plugs and they are needed as the...

    Old school 1/2 inch pipe

hiya! Long story short I’m doing my very first plumbing job along with a friend and we have been patiently getting together sockets straight connectors, adapters to work with 15ml inlet to a on off tap that then goes to a 22mm shower. Hasn’t been easy until now... but then I try and connect a...

Imperial to metric olive - Which way?

Hello all. I’m replacing a stop tap which is connected to black alkathene and then feeds the flat in 1/2 inch copper. I’ve bought a 22mm stopcock, along with some imperial to metric olives. Could anyone please identify the thread and connection required to fit this old stopcock (photo attached), the problem thread is 0.894" across the thread, with 14 threads per inch. The feed pipe into the stopcock is 1/2" copper, and is approximately 4" long - from the concrete floor to the...

Do all imperial pipe measurements refer to a nominal bore?

And all metric pipe measurements refer to OD? So 3.5" cast iron soil will be roughly 3.5" ID and 110mm plastic soil will be something like 105mm ID? Thanks

    1970's Imperial microbore....

Hi all, had a 'mare the other night, "just cutting off" 2 x f&r's to an old towel rail, couldn't get an 8mm fitting onto the pipe and a 10mm flapped around like a clowns hat! Managed to unsolder some scrap adaptors from the pipework (which unfortunately had no maker marks on them) and re-use as...
