In light microscopy, oil immersion is a technique used to increase the resolving power of a microscope. This is achieved by immersing both the objective lens and the specimen in a transparent oil of high refractive index, thereby increasing the numerical aperture of the objective lens.
Without oil, light waves reflect off the slide specimen through the glass cover slip, through the air, and into the microscope lens (see the colored figure to the right). Unless a wave comes out at a 90-degree angle, it bends when it hits a new substance, the amount of bend depending on the angle. This distorts the image. Air has a very different index of refraction from glass, making for a larger bend compared to oil, which has an index more similar to glass. Specially manufactured oil can have nearly exactly the same refractive index as glass, making an oil immersed lens nearly as effective as having entirely glass to the sample (which would be impractical).
Immersion oils are transparent oils that have specific optical and viscosity characteristics necessary for use in microscopy. Typical oils used have an index of refraction of around 1.515. An oil immersion objective is an objective lens specially designed to be used in this way. Many condensers also give optimal resolution when the condenser lens is immersed in oil.

Newly installed immersion heater suddenly stopped working after a week. What could be the issue?

I've recently replaced an immersion heater for a direct cylinder, for 2.75-3kW. The new one seemed to be working a week before I got a callback. I checked the resistance of the immersion heater, and it read 19ohms, and the voltage on the live and neutral read 230V, but there was no humming or...

    Faulty Immersion element stat?

I have just had a new boiler and 210 ltr unvented tank fitted in the loft to replace a very old Baxi back boiler. I have now fitted a Solic 200 diverter to utilise all the spare capacity from the 3,84 Kw Pv system on the roof. This has only just become an option as the old existing tank did not...

    Immersion Element help

Hi. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Bit general. We have solar boosting our hot water using iboost. My question, the current immersion element hasn’t been changed for 14 years. Should I upgrade/change it to increase efficiency? Current I haven’t seen any degradation in...

    Dual immersion heater question

I recently posted to request information about supply of a "dual Immersion heater". Two members kindly replied with helpful advice. I tried to respond with thanks but the system persistently refused to accept this; quoting: "Your content can not be submitted. This is likely because your content...

Dual immersion heater with sink/bath switch

I have read of hot water cylinders being heated with a dual element immersion heater. The main principle being that a shorter element heats the top of the tank and then, subsequently, a longer element comes into play. With a bath/sink switch the longer element may be disabled. The topic of such...

Tesla T-Smart immersion heater reliability ?

Has anyone fitted a Tesla T-Smart immersion heater and can comment on reliability ? On Amazon, there are mixed reviews, with one saying that it is dangerous as it didn't turn off properly. I spoke to Tesla and they said that those reports were early teething issues (but I guess they would say...

Part of Immersion Heater Element Fell into Tank

Struggled with an element that was far too wide to come out of the aperture (how was it ever put in ?) I had to cut one loop. After some brute force the head broke off leaving the broken ends of the element protruding. I wiggled half of it out at which point the other half fell back into the...

    Immersion tank is always on

Hi, the immersion tank is running all the time and we can't switch it off. I've uploaded pictures of the devices attached to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Immersion heater noise

I had a new water heater element fitted a few weeks ago that heats water at night on economy 7. Previous heater elements have been very quiet but I can hear the new one heating the tank at night. It sounds a bit like a boiling kettle. Is this normal? It’s driving me mad!

Drilling a hole in an immersion tank.

I checked where to fit my essex flanges for the recirc pump after looking into the water tank. The hole cutter I have is in the pic. Are the teeth too coarse for thin copper? Anyone cut into a hot water copper tank? What sort of hole cutter did you use? Thanks.

Immersion heater coming on too early

Hi all I’m not a plumber or a DIYer. I need help! My immersion heater has started coming on at about 10.15 pm. I dont know when this started happening but normally it comes on after midnight ( it runs on eco 7). The immersion is wired into a switch on the wall that lights up when the heater is...

    Removing a tight immersion element.

Got all my stuff together to finally fit the recirculation pump to my hot water tank, but I can't budge the immersion element. I need this out because a) I'm fitting solar which will be used to heat the hot water and although the fitted element has not been used so far, it's been in maybe 20...

    Immersion heater problems!

Good evening everyone :), I’ve recently moved into a new flat that is completely electric (It’s got a dual immersion heater) and just had a smart meter installed. Immersion Heated Switch

Hello, We have a water tank and with all the Energy talk at the moment, we’ve been told to check that the immersion isn’t on all the time! We have constant hot water so my assumption is that it has been left on. This may sound like a stupid question but is the the correct switch to keep...

immersion heater failed after 4 months

Is there any reason other than poor element. Why an immersion heater would fail 4 months after fitting on an unvented cylinder? Apparently it has power too it etc. Thanks. It isn't the original one either.

    A leaky immersion tank

I have a gas boiler in the kitchen which heats the water to the upstairs immersion heater/tank. Immersion heater very little hot water

I moved into a flat over a month ago now and realized when trying to take a shower that there was little to no hot water - at this time I would turn the water on full out, it would stay cold for maybe 30 sec, it would then get noticeably warmer (lukewarm) and then run out again in maybe 15...

Hot tank with two immersion heaters

Hi everyone I have a 20 year old Megaflo CL250 indirect hot water tank that I typically heat with an oil-fired boiler.
