float valve

A ballcock (also balltap or float valve) is a mechanism or machine for filling water tanks, such as those found in flush toilets, while avoiding overflow and (in the event of low water pressure) backflow. The modern ballcock was invented by José Antonio de Alzate y Ramírez, a Mexican priest and scientist, who described the device in 1790 in the Gaceta de Literatura Méxicana. The ballcock device was patented in 1797 for use in steam engines by Edmund Cartwright. It consists of a valve connected to a hollow, sealed float by means of a lever mounted near the top of the tank. The float is often ball-shaped, hence the name ballcock. The valve is connected to the incoming water supply, and is opened and closed by the lever which has the float mounted on the end. When the water level rises, the float rises with it; once it rises to a pre-set level, the mechanism forces the lever to close the valve and shut off the water flow. This is an example of negative feedback and of proportional control.

How fix new fill valve plastic part?

    Float valve replacement

Hi Had a quote from a plumber to replace two toilet float valves in a flat for £282. Had 2 questions: 1. Is this the right solution? It doesn't feel right to me. 2. Am I being overcharged? The problem is noisy pipes within the flat. The noise happens when water is being used anywhere in the...

    CWS float valve: part1/2 compatibility

Tonight the arm of the ballcock feeding the cold water storage cistern in my attic broke (quite puzzling: maybe due to strong wind causing some turbulence??). Anyway, I need to replace it. I know it's faster to replace only the part inside the tank, undoing the very last compression nut. But...

Slight leak after changing float valve

I was just hoping for a bit of advice. I recently had to change the float valve in my toilet and did it myself as it seemed quite straightforward. The old valve seemed to have been stuck in with sealant so it was quite hard to get out. I fitted the new valve but noticed a very slight leak...

Hi, I'm new to all this but I've got a dripping/leaking overflow pipe in a 1970's bungalow, I'm sure it's coming from the float valve because it's not ****ting off completely and constantly dripping although when I raise the ballcock it stops.? The next thing is I can't see where I turn the...

    Removing a float valve

Hi all, I've been having problems with a fitted toilet and water leaking into the bowl. On inspection I've come to the conclusion that it must be the float valve. I've managed to remove and check the outlet valve with not much problem and I've also unclipped the float valve from the side of...
