Hello all!
Great forum guys. Just been browsing this afternoon and decided to join. I was actually looking for advice on my current situation but I'll post that in the relevant section. Looks like there's plenty of good advisors around anyway. Thanks for letting me join!

Hello and welcome Davy,

You can be sure there are plenty of good engineers on here which will give always good and plausible advises. Do not be shy to share your issue I am sure people will help you.

Kind regrads

Ron

Hello and welcome

Thanks guys. Ok I'll try and keep it brief. After doing an HND in measurement and control engineering I'm not getting anywhere so was looking at the bpec gas foundation course and went to an open day where they stressed having a mentor was the most important thing. I don't have the 2 grand for the course but I do have a mentor. I looked on the bpec site and the course materials and portfolio can be purchased for ÂŁ75. So, could I get trained up and do the portfolio without the college and submit my work as a cat 3? I would love to take the college route but just don't have the cash. Anyone know if this is possible?

Awwwwrite Davy boy welcome along

Welcome aboard davy your obviosly quite bright but when i comes to gas there is really no short cuts you really need to know what you are dealing with and have a thorough knowledge of what you are doing, i would say by all means work with your mentor to gain experience but you will have to do the full course at some point so knuckle down save your pennies and if your really want to do it you will find the money from somewhere credit is pretty easy to come by these days many credit cards are interest free best of luck kop

Cheers kop. I might have to go the credit card route like you say. I'm not looking for a short cut or fast track as I realise there is a lot to learn. I just wondered since the college can't sign off on the portfolio which is the essential piece of evidence is the college training an absolute necessity if your mentor can teach you the exact same thing? When I read this back I know it sounds like a guy trying to weasel his way out of doing a course but to eventually become gas registered the bpec course is not recognised and it seems as though as long as you have the knowledge and evidence to prove competence then that is all that's needed as a pre requisite to sit the acs exams as a cat 3. Sorry for the long post.

I would contact gas safe and ask them about it they will be able to put you on the right track regards kop.

Morning and welcome along to the world of madness and mayhem. If you have an amazing mentor the fast track route can work, but it is harder to start with. It might be a little more in price dependent on elements taken but will get you working quicker.

Cheers for the help guys. It's my dad that's the gas service engineer and he's happy to give me as much training and help as I need. He was always trying to get me into the gas trade as a teenager but I was too young and stupid to see what an opportunity I had and never did it. Now I've wised up I really want to do it. He reckons the college part isn't absolutely essential as he can teach me everything but I'm not one hundred percent sure he's right about that so I wanted to check if anyone has ever faced the same problem.

Hi Davy,

Get the right advice you require off the relevant authority's - which may require numerous phonecalls and finding the right person to speak to.
Don't take what the first, second or third different person you speak to as gospel, keep trying until you find a person who meets your requirements.

Next - if you have to go to College - hit your 'old man' up for the fees and promise to pay him back.

That's what parents are for!!!!!

Cheers oz-plumber. I'll make a few phone calls this week and post what I find out incase anyone's interested.

Welcome, please keep us posted!

Ok it turns out some form of off the job training by a college or training provider is essential. The confusing thing is that a cat 3 entrant is required to do one of these courses which turns them into a cat 2 entrant so essentially there is no such thing as cat 3. Anyway, the details are in the acs guidance note 8. The list of approved courses which will allow you to sit acs exams is given in acs GN 8 appendix 1 if anyone is interested. Just Google it and you'll find it. Also, it turns out any of the bpec courses qualify you as a cat 2 entrant. Thanks to all that helped.

Hi guys. I'm trying to identify a toilet model before ordering a seat for a customer. I went to what used to be a Roca stockist (they no longer are) and one of the guys there reckoned it might be "The Gap". I went to the new stockist and the guy there disagreed it was "The Gap" and that he'd...

Hi, basic question, any insight much appreciated. Looking to have an outdoor tap in my front porch fed from 15mm pex coming up from suspended floor. Pic 1 is inside porch, pex temporarily clipped to give an idea of pipe placement (ignore shoddy blockwork of booted cowboy builder!), Pic 2 is...
