    Is the copper thread liable to cross if tightened to much? I'm just thinking that copper is quite soft

    Once it's started it won't cross.
    You'll struggle to cross thread 2" by hand

    If in doubt about cross threading, unwind the connection until you hear a click then start to tighten again. Damaged to fittings can occur if the male bottoms out and you continue to over tighten.
