For example, my husband decided to quit office work and become a Corgi registered gas engineer. At 31 years old it was impractical for him to take 4 years out to complete an apprenticeship so we paid £8,000 for an intensive 6 month retraining course that qualified him to be a gas engineer. Now he is having trouble finding work as it seems many companies are resentful of the fact that someone has fast tracked their career even though he has exactly the same qualifications and experience as someone who has completed an apprenticeship.Nowadays it seems that if you want to be a skilled tradesman you have to decide when you are 16 because if you want to retrain when you are an adult, no-one wants to know.I would like to hear from other gas engineers and also companies.
