I have heard that the large plastic header tanks can somehow be folded to get them in or out of a standard loft hatch.

I need to get a large disused circular black plastic one out of my loft but although it is slightly flexible it seems far too stiff to be able to fold it.

Is it possible, and if so what is the technique?

If not, how do plumbers change a loft header tank if necessary?

If it is coming out saw it up.

Put your cwst over the loft opening and jump on it. Folds up a treat.

The older round tanks I know, are very flexible & you can pull it together, folding it slightly & tie it with a rope to make it a sort of canoe shape to get through a loft hatch, if you really want it for some reason. If it is the newer type, the base will be very rigid, so forget about doing much with it. Saw it up.
Seems they have got bigger & more rigid, unlike other things!

On another point, the round tanks (bulky as they are), are the best tank because they are round, as makes them evenly strong.

Hole too small? Leave it up there. Unless it's copper

I was thinking of using it as a water butt in the garden if I could get it out in one piece.
