Default Anyone got news on the switchover to the new NVQ diploma in P&H?

Hi all, I've been accepted onto a course at my local college. It's called: FC0751 NVQ diploma in plumbing and heating L2. Page here:Plumbing NVQ Intermediate Diploma Level 2 (Sept '11)

The guys at the college tell me that this is what is replacing both the 6129 and 6089 as a combined course. It doesn't include lead work anymore...

I think this is the page for it on the C and G website: City & Guilds | Qualification | NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating

I was hoping to do the old 6129 as the college runs it over a year and only does this new qualification 1 day a week over two years.

Has anyone heard anything about this new qualification?
My college hasn't yet been able to find out if it's possible to do the 6129 and then just add on a few of the modules from the combined course to add up to equivelent to the diploma. Has anyone else found out about this?

    Thanks in a advance!

    I'm in Brighton, East sussex.

The college seems quite happy to start me on the course whilst not employed - they say they register me with C and G and I then have 5 years to do all the needed on the job aspects.

    Thanks for the input

is there a charge? if your paying up front there is no risk for them. the 5 years is the registration with c&g not your enrolment

Yes, pay upfornt - hence no risk for them. I'm building up a few guys who will be able to give me a bit of experience etc and hopefully let me do the on site assesments.

They seemed to be suggesting they register you right from the start with C and G, but may have misunderstood.

Seems to me that unless I want to do a fast track (which I don't really - too many horror storys) this is the only route.

I'm not 100% decided yet. Got someone from trade skills for you coming round thursday - so shall see what they have to say, though as they're fast track i', not holding out much hope - just want to see what they have to say.

Do you know where I could get a list of the kind of things that need to be done on site and signed off for?

can i ask what they are charging please?
yes they do register you straight away, but the 5 years is your registration with C&G. check how long your enrolling for , if they only enrol you for 1 year, when you come to year 2 you will have to pay again
big risk if you dont have any work, if you dont get it you dont get the qual

It's £1500 per year (2 year course). They've been very open and upfront about the need to get signed off on site and clear that if I don't get that done I won't have the qualification.

I assume you'd suggest not signing up to any course until you've got work guarenteed?

Hi Guys, can anyone offer me any advice. I recently enrolled on the c and G 6128, to then be told I had been upgraded for free to the 6189 nvq2. I am not in employment, and came out of office work in January through redundancy after 20 years. I wasnt informed about needing to get assessed for the nvq2 on site untill i had paid my fundsm then the info came through advising me of this, and tha the assessments cost 300 a go, and it would be my responsibility to find the work, I called the training sales guy, and he said you can be nvq qualified but you dont have to be nvq assessed? does this sound a bit false, and how long after i complete the course will i have to get assesed? Is the nvq2 changing??

It all happened very quick.Sales guy came round to sell me the 6129, which was once you done the course, and passed, you get the qualification. Then i git a call to say due to the switch overm they upgraded me for free to the 6189 nvq2. Then i goyt literature through the post and in small print it stated it woudl be up to the student to gain the employment to get the assessment and pass . I queried this, as it was not mentioned or needed for the 6129 and obvioulsy meant me having to find employment, and shell out for the assessments on top of course fees , travel, accomodation etc. The sales guy just said that i didnt have to get assessed if i did not want to, as i would be NVQ qualified just not assesses, and that the c and g part was more important. ME being totally new to this industry, and wanting to learn it, have taken his word. How long after finishing the qualification do you have to get assessed?

often c and g is used to make it sound more credible, dont get confused, the nvq is a c&g, did you read my thread on it?
the 6129 is the tech cert and rubbish on its own
you have 5 years from starting to complete, but that doesnt mean the centre will enrol you for 5 years, they may enrol you for 1
you will not get the NVQ without being assessed on site, you will NOT PASS unless assessed on site. you will get some units towards that stand for nothing unless you have all of the and therefore the full qual
