Arran123, you can't get a proper NVQ 3 on one of these courses! To get a NVQ 2 OR 3 you have to be working in the industry. A level 2 or 3 certificate in plumbing is worth nothing to any employer! It just means you read some books answered some questions and done a little pipework work on a bench. Which does not make you a plumber!!!

A1 Tiler,

Stick with this plumber you are with, maybe do a short course that gives you a qualification just to keep you up to speed on current regs. Then go straight in for your NVQ2 after a few years with him.

If its just domestic plumbing your doing and interested in, I wouldn't bother jumping through the hoops of the 6129 / 6089. Just go for a short course where you get a recognised qualification and stay at that

I signed up for the olci course 3 years ago. I was working nightshift as an engineer in electronics factory so it suited me.

My brother in law was a plumber so I spent a couple of years working part time with him and working through the 6129 course at the same time. I didn't see the benefit of rushing through it in 6-8 weeks.

I did the practical training and assessments in Livingston, scotland. the 2 trainers there were fantastic, very knowledgeable and helpful.

I recently did the ACS gas training with them and that was a totally different story. They completely mis sold the course and are utterly disorganised in the teaching of it.

I'm currently working self employed as a plumber and spending as much time as I can with 2 corgi guys I know to build a gas portfolio.
