Plumbing and Electrics & Electronics had been my hobby since the childhood, but after coming to the UK and living in a dozen of the house shares over the past 15 years, including a couple of uninsulatted loft conversions and boxing rooms with 6 inch thick solid brick walls and some council house share properties with lead water service pipes (still found in >25% of Cambridge rental properties of Victorian era) one had learned quite a lot about the importance of the proper pluming and heating system design, operation & configuration and importance of it to ones health and well-being.
Given the solid background in natural sciences and good skills requirements of fault finding and integrated systems design in my day to day job, it helped to gain more first hand practical heating systems and plumbing experience and to enjoy some time fixing things up in the places that I had been living in and for my friends.
