This has been covered quite a bit in here in the past. Have a quick search and you should find a few threads.

I don't use them personally, I know too many people have been stung by them/by customers using them.

checkatrade is a means of advertising, isnt cheap and cant bite you on the bum if one customer gets a bazzy on , my builder etc are just leaches taking money from you whilst everyone bids themselves down, sheer madness!!!

Sorry but dont agree with Lame plumber I use My Builder and have got quite a lot of work its a bit hard to start but once you have some good feedback and learn how to pick your jobs it can pay off. I tried advertising locally, spent lots of money for very little results. I can only say give it a try as it can vary from area to area due to the number of jobs versus tradesman, plus My builder has no sign up fees so you only pay for the job leads you are shortlisted for.

thats the thing, you pay for something with no guarantee of getting it unless you go low, only speaking my opinion on my builder, but looked into it and ran away, decent website, use manufacturers schemes, local advertising seem to me to be best consistent methods, plus sign written van

You can advertise locally and get a call to quote for a job with no guarantees, your still paying, It works for some and not for others , as I said to the op give it a try with My Builder as there are no sign up fees so you only pay for the leads you want, and not a load of nuisance sales calls that I got when listing my number in local paper and yellow pages.

seems daft quoting for a job, paying somebody for the privilege for a one off. I didnt say local papers or yellow pages, try parish mags or local advertising mags if you have them, customers tend to keep them handy near their phones, nearly all my work has come from a couple of these, timewasters are found through all means, weed them out on the phone, ie can you quote for a leaky tap? no thanks
