This question has probably been asked a few times so sorry for that.

I done a break down today on a old Worcester Heatslave. Oil pump had gone so I replaced it as well as checked the fan, electrodes etc to see if they were in good condition. I charged 70 quid labour and my boss wasn't happy with the cheap price (reason I charged was because I didn't have any signal)

So what do boys charge for servicing, repairs etc. I'm lost when it comes to pricing.

How long were you there as 70 would cover upto 2 hours ?

What's your boss changing per hour

Ph x h = labour
Parts + 10-15% = parts
L + p = bill
 
Roughly 4 hours including with having to go and grab the pump from the suppliers.

In regards to what my boss charges per hour o don't have a clue. He pays me 'per day' which is rubbish in my opinion but it's money for me at the end of the day. He told me to phone him but I had no signal so couldn't hold of him.

This varies greatly, to cover yourself ask the boss to give you a list of what to charge for the popular parts and what he wants you to charge per hour or part of the second hour.

Ask your boss what he would be happy with per hour and how does he work his prices out
 
Mine tells me what he wants for the first hour and what to charge for the second hour, the second hour I charge per 15, 30 or 45 minutes I`m on site.
My price list covers over 100 items and new pumps so it is all in Black & White.

I'm just a plumber/technician that works for him so personally I think it's unfair that he has me to deal with this sort of thing when I'm just an employee. Treats me like I'm a partner or something, but that's another thing.

Keeps him off your back tho and keeps him sweet :D
 
70 for 4 hours is cheap and then you had to go and get parts which is also petrol.

But it all depends where you are based , in general it sounds too cheap. As mentioned above ask for a breakdown list of materials as well as hourly rates and then you are on the safe side.
 
Oil pump is less than an hour to diagnose, swap and test combustion.

45 + (fuel pump x 30%) = sorted.

Fuel pump in van, it's def on the list of spares to be carried.

Your boss needs to give you a sheet with how much for each part or get a hwos brochure + 30%
 
I was thinking same as SimonG as I read the thread.
You definitely should have the oil pump as an always in the van spare part. It is your firms fault for you not carrying basic parts and shouldn't be an extra cost to your customers, IMO.
One hour would be generous time allowed to look, fix and test it and add time for travel to and from the job.
£70 for labour seems plenty to me if you had have been properly supplied with spares.
 
Should of been a van stock item. Round here £70 would be an hour on site. Probably including travel to the job.
 
Up here near me (North East) we all seem to be charging in the region of £70 for a service which would include a nozzle but with other parts as extras. If the boiler was found to be not working and not a simple fix but needing a lot of extra time and work to a normal service, then this would be charged pro rata as an extra.
 
Some are advertising here 40 or 50 pounds for oil or gas boiler service.
But has to be add ons with oil boilers
 
Yeah, someone here advertises oil services for £50, but then charges £15 for a nozzle and £15 for a basic braided fuel hose each time, then youve probably got 20% VAT on top of that

I don't see it as unfair.

I price jobs, estimate, invoice, collect payment. It's all part of a standard day.

Saying that tho, if you're expected to do that, he should give you training/guidance so you don't get in to this issue again.

If you can do the job start to finish including payment, you're more valuable to the company. Less likely to lose your job and can command a higher pay.
