Default Do you need paper qualifications for GSR?

Having read a lot of posts, it seems that to get GSR you have to be working under the supervision of a GSR and complete a certain number of gas installations. Am I right about this?

But mainly my question is, do you also have to study at college on a gas safety course, and get a paper certificate from them as well?

To become GSR all you need is CCN1 with appliances and CPA1.
Then you apply to Gas Safe, pay your fees and jobs a good un.

To get on a CCN1 course you will either need previous qualifications or go on the introductory course.

    Hi
mountainman is right regarding your application to become GSR (well almost) but it is the CCN1 that is the problem (& you have to have this to become GSR) unless you have an NVQ in plumbling, heating or gas then you go down as a category 3 applicant & you will have to do some off the job (college training) as well as on the job & build a portfolio of gas work that the person who is GSR will sign off to say that you have carried it out.
The off the job training is around 20 -30 days depending on how you or the training center do it. The on the job is 140 day's (which can includes the days at college)
If you do have a level 2 (or 3) NVQ then you go down as category 2 you still need to have the on the job experiences (around 70 days) but do not have to do the college bit

CPA1 now included in the CCN1 (& boilers & water heater have merged)
Don't they still come out & see newbies on a number of jobs before you get fully registered ??

once qualified and you have paid GSR they will register you and put you on a 3 month probationary list, within that time they will visit you and inspect 2-3 jobs, depending on how you do on the visit you will get removed from the probationary list or referred for further visits and probation

The reason I ask is that I do NOT want to be a plumber as I am long retired.

However, in the past I was keen on DIY and went on loads of courses eg car maintenance, computer building, computer programming, bricklaying, plastering, PLUMBING (iron, copper, lead), GAS SAFETY, and a servicing course on my own boiler at that time. It was long before the days of GSR and gas analysers too.

I like to know how things work, so I was thinking about getting an up-to-date gas safety certificate and go on a course on my current boiler. However, I wouldn't mess with it as it has a 5 year warranty anyway, and I can't afford gear like a gas analyser.

There is no way I can actually install systems (nor want to) as I am too old for this, but would have liked all the knowledge to be GSR.

It looks like this will not be possible from the above replies.

    Any other comments?

No sorry, things have really moved on it the last few year. It really is a whole different ball game now from when you were tinkering around with your own boiler.

Ive had a shockingly bad day. Full heating install 12 rads, chipboard flooring, furniture everywhere, annoying know it all customer, no tea. The list goes on. But your post put a smile back on my face! But glad to hear you won't be messing with your boiler...for 5 years at least!

So let me get this right. You want to spend a good few grand getting your gas ticket, then another monkey getting gsr, then another monkey on an fga and a few more quids on other equipment and tools and then finally getting yourself on a manufacturers course which may not be a free one.........

My hobby is learning new things, I even taught myself how to ride a unicycle at well over the age of 50! And went to uni a few years ago to do a law degree, just to see what uni is like.

Is that why you can't now afford a gas analyser, I hope when I get to retirement age (due to be about 70 + at this rate) I can afford to indulge my interest in such a way. Some how I thing I will still be trying to scratch out a living in this industry until I drop.
