No, even plastic coated pipe has to be sleeved.

You can't use ordinary plastic coated but you can if it is kuterlex plus (the one with the air channels)

It's to allow for movement of the pipe or wall.
The plastic coating won't easily move on the pipe.

The sleeving should normally be made of the same material as the pipe.

Sleaving gas pipe through a wall is not just to protect the pipe from corrosion as plastic coating would accomplish. It is so that you can seal the inside wall end and if the pipe was to rupture for any reason you won't have gas leaking into a cavity.

Plasitc coating is suitable for a 10mm supply pipe through the back of a builders opening to a fire.

Not suitable for a gas pipe directly through a cavity wall. It must be sleaved!

As Snowhead said, the sleeve is there to provide a movement gap between the wall and pipe as well as sealing any cavity.

Hence why kuterlex plus is suitable , but why would you. It is too expensive for everyday use.

This is basic bread and butter stuff. Or so I thought. Gas pipe installation.
You can use a number of materials, PVC, copper etc., as long as the gas pipe can pass though and be sealed on inside.
