    Default A BIG ask!!!!

Just had a phonecall from a fella asking me if i could sign off a multi point

water heater and i asked the question as to who installed it and he said a

plumber installed the appliance and then i asked if he was gas safe registered

and he said NO so i said instantly that i am not prepared to sign off any work that was installed by a plumber.

Why he did not get a gas engineer to install the heater is beyond me as he has now shot himself in the foot as its gonna cost him loads to get the boiler de-commissioned and re-commisioned by a gas safe engineer

Not risking my ticket for the sake of 100 quid which is what he wanted to pay..the cheek.

Has anyone else beem asked to sign of work that was not installed by a gas safe engineer as i would like to know what their outcome was

I have been asked loads of times, to which my answer is always no.

    Not worth risking it.

As a layman in these matters- would it be OK to ask a qualified person to disconnect the gas and recommission ?

The manufacturers and government, for letting appliances be sold to non registered people, for a bit of extra cash,I like the TV license system, purchasers have to fill in their name and address and if appliance not registered within a month, letter sent out and maybe a fixed fine, every month, increasing until registered, after four months and not registered, gas disconnected and their finger nails pulled out one at a time,if you are not going to do above and enforce regs, why bother

The issue is having appliances fitted correctly and safely not who does and does not sign them off, that should not be a issue

    imho

Why didn't u say that u would go commision the appliance but charge extra as u would have to double check everything as it wasn't u that fitted it. Worse case scenario is u ID it and then charge for the rework. If it's not fitted to standard again just charge for rework or u won't sign it off, put the ball in his court. Seems win win to me tbh

Should have a scheme where the local council come out and inspect and test for a set fee.

Like they do for electrical installations.

Just make all necessary checks, pay particular attention to gas, flue, ventilation etc, charge extra for the hassle. Job done, nice bit of cash

dont forget to rip up the floor to replace the gas supply to ensure you are happy it meets the standards required, have a look at the gas safe tech note on doing this work and you probably wont ever consider signing off someone elses work, unless you can reinstall from scratch.
