Hi everyone,

I know there have been a few threads on t4ts, however I have recently signed with them and feel that I am a slightly different case to most of their other students. I am currently a self employed sparks and looking to expand my business. My question is wether I can be trained to an adequate standard?
Obviously my reputation is essential to me and I won't be doing any bodges or work I'm unsure of. I feel that as a sparks with 11 years experience, I stand a much better chance than most as I already have a lot of the practical skills needed, a tradesmans approach to the work environment, a working knowledge of building regs, not to mention working alongside plumbers everyday. I even have access to work experience through a plumber I regularly use (though unpaid).
TBH the recognition of the qualifications are not as important to me as being competently able to do the work, as I will never be applying for plumbers jobs. I also understand that this course will not make me a quality plumber overnight as part p electrical courses have shown in my game.
I have so many avenues for plumbing work through my existing customer base, I honestly belieive I could double my yearly turnover, so would love this to work out. I would love to hear other peoples opinions.
Thanks

Whenever they want?
Got apprenticeship Oct 08,
Pay rise Sep 09,
Finished course Jun 2010.
Still on same wedge as Sep 09!! :(
Just I took my final paper in June, which was confirmed a pass on that day, marked by C&G a week later, and I've just got my certs through saying all dates etc.... I'm thinking I should have been on an increased wedge since Jun 2010?

hi
as some of you may know i am doing the train 4 trade skills course to gain my 6129, now ive heard that from december onwards they qualifications are changing so im wanting to aim to get my nvq 2 before december. ive got my final 2 weeks training in a month or so, what i need to know is what jobs do i need to complete and how many jobs do i need to complete for my portfolio for nvq2? so i can arrange to get them done in the 2-3 months before december. going to cost me a fortune paying an nvq accessor to come check my work but its the only way to do it as i work for my self and also work for my old man doing plumbing just kitchens and bathrooms but he is not a qualified plumber.
hope you understand what im trying to say and look forward to your reply

Hello all,

As some of you may know I am trying my hardest to get some volunteer hours with plumbers to up my chances of getting into plumbing as a career, either through an apprenticeship or just buiding up enough experience.

Anyway, all plumbers i have spoke to have said that i should just try and gain as much experience as possible and that will help me, well im thinking of taking a short course to help me become more employable as a volunteer if that makes sense.

Now, this course is not a fast track 6129 and I will not do it and expect a plumber to send me out on his behalf to fit a bathroom nor will i think that i have suddenly become a plumbing machine that can tackle any problem thrown at me.

BUT

Able skills do an intensive basic plumbing and advanced DIY plumbing 5 day course. There is theory involved but they teach a lot of practical skills to make you competent in DIY plumbing such as fitting a bathroom, replacing radiators or fitting trv's etc, pipe bending, soldering and the usual everyday things. Im hoping that if I can at least get to a level where i am confident doing DIY it will show effort to learn and that i am serious, it will also give me a foundation to build on as a volunteer.

Have any of you been on any able skills course and what are they like ?
