I can complete the first 3 steps - not sure about step 4.
"...then with a adjustable spanner you can remove the brass insert to which the tap washer is attatched".....

The brass insert only twists back and forth as much as the tap would turn originally and then stops. Do I have to apply a lot of pressure to turn and remove it completely with the spanner? It has fine grooves all around it which are in danger of being damaged if I squeeze too tightly with the spanner.
